Pet owners are advised of a nationwide recall affecting specific batches of dry pet food across several brands, including Bobtail, Bonzo, Canine Cuisine, Catmor, Feline Cuisine, Optimizor and Ultra Pet. This recall has been issued by RCL Foods as a precautionary measure to protect pets and ensure consumer safety.
Why the Recall Was Issued
The recall follows an incident in which condemned pet food that had been sent to a waste management facility for destruction was stolen and later resold in the market. There is concern that some of these products may have entered the formal retail supply chain.
Prior to this incident, internal quality testing at one manufacturing facility detected traces of Salmonella contamination in a limited number of dry pet food batches. These batches were isolated and sent for destruction, but due to the theft incident, some of these products may now be in circulation. Although the number of affected products is limited, the recall has been issued as a precautionary step to protect pets and provide clarity to consumers and retailers.
What are the symptoms of Salmonella to look out for?
- Common symptoms in pets include diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, loss of appetite and lethargy.
- Common symptoms in humans include diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, stomach cramps, abdominal pain, nausea and headaches.
- Young children, the elderly, pregnant woman and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness.
What Pet Owners Should Do
Pet owners are encouraged to check the brand, product name, pack size and Best Before date printed on their pet food packaging.
If your pet food matches any of the products listed below:
- Stop feeding the product to your pet immediately
- Return the product to the store or veterinary clinic where it was purchased
- The retailer will arrange for the product to be returned through the recall process
